Constipation during Pregnancy

June 29, 2007

Constipation during pregnancy is quite common.  There are things that you can do to try to prevent or relieve constipation.

1) Exercise: walking regularly

2) Drink lots of water:  8 glasses of water is the recommended amount in your daily diet.  You may find that you increase the recommended amount during pregnancy.

3) Eat prunes, raw garlic, onions or parsley.

This is a list I came up with from doing lots of reading when I was pregnant.  I am not a physician, so if you are experiencing discomfort due to constipation please contact your physician.

Heartburn during Pregnancy

June 26, 2007

There is an old saying that goes something like this, “if you have lots of heartburn your baby will be born with lots of hair”.  Don’t know if there is any truth to it.  But I did experience lots of heartburn, and all my boys had LOTS of hair.

When I started experiencing heartburn (about 6 months pregnant), I started eating smaller meals and drank a glass of milk when I was feeling heartburn, it helped me quite a bit.

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to post your comment.

Buying baby’s clothes and furniture

June 26, 2007

Most mommies are comfortable with starting to purchase baby’s clothes and furniture when they are about six months pregnant.

Remember not to go crazy if this is your first baby, someone may be throwing you a baby shower.

You may decide to make up a wishlist of useful things for baby with the father.  Remember to include any other children you have in this process.  My older sons loved helping us set up the nursery for their baby brother.

Borrow things if the chance is given to you.  But if you do make sure that items like the carseat, highchairs and crib meets safety standards.

Varicose Veins in Pregnancy

June 25, 2007

When I was pregnant with my third son, I developed bad varicose veins.  My doctor said it was due to my weight going up and down resulting from having three pregnancies close together.  These are some of the recommendations I received and things I tried after doing some research.

If you have varicose veins exercise regularly, try not to stand for long periods of time or cross your legs.

Foods that increase elasticity of the blood vessels to improve varicose veins are raw garlic, onions and parsley.

Drinking nettle tea can prevent varicose veins and helps relieve muscle cramps in legs.  But before trying this tea, speak to your doctor as you may be allergic to this herb.

To find out more about varicose veins and how to prevent them, click the following  http://www.babycenter.ca/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/naturalremedies/varicoseveinsandpiles/#3

Remember to speak to your doctor about your varicose veins if they are causing pain.  Your doctor will be able to recommend something that can be may effective, like wearing support hoses…..they worked great for me.

Types of Prenatal Care

June 23, 2007

After you have had your first ultrasound, you may want to begin the process of researching the types of prenatal care and delivery options avaliable to you in your area.  It’s not set in stone that you have to deliver in the hospital, you may opt for a birth clinic that has a home-like setting and feel.

Make a pro and con list with the father and remember to discuss any questions or concerns with your physician.
